 What's the Matter?                     
                                        
 Near Geneva, on the French-Swiss       
 border, lies the hottest place in the  
 Universe. There, scientists are making 
 pieces of matter from a kind of furnace
 called a particle accelerator.         
                                        
 They speed particles up until they are 
 travelling at near the speed of light  
 and then smash them together. Particles
 which haven't existed since the        
 universe was young and hot come out of

 What's the Matter?                     
                                        
 Particles are the shrapnel of these    
 explosions. Their paths can bj seen    
 when they pass through hi-tech         
 machinery. From the paths they leave we
 can deduce what kind of particles they 
 were.                                  
                                        
 There are hundreds more particles than 
 just the electrons, protons and        
 neutrons which we study at school. Some
 of them only live for millionths of a  
 second and most of them take a lot  of
