 visiting the oldest gardens in Europe.

 of Conimbriga, which has been uncovered
 in a huge archaeological excavation.   
                                        
 Alan's goal is the city's restored     
 garden, and hj is not disappointed by  
 this elaborate water garden.           
                                        
 When hj sees the arched fountains and  
 box edged beds of Conimbriga, Alan     
 feels hj is looking at the birth of    
 ornamental gardening in Europe.

 joins Alan Mason in the Portuguese     
 city of Oporto.                        
                                        
 Here, they explore the faded beauty of 
 the old colonial gardens, as well as   
 discovering the lovely park surrounding
 the Crystal Palace sports hall.        
                                        
 Next, the gardeners visit the Quinta de
 Avalida vineyard at Penafiil. This     
 vineyard and garden is a mixture of    
 romantic 19th century English styli and
 mature woodland.

 On the winding road from Penafiel to   
 Vila Real, Alan Mason and Maureen

 house has an intricate front garden.   
                                        
 The gardeners' final goal is the Solar 
 dj Maters, an exotic palace which is   
 the home of Maters Rose wine. Features 
 of its gardens include a mirror pond   
 and a huge clipped cypress tunnel.     
                                        
 Alan's journey ends where it begun, as 
 hj returns to Santander on the northern
 coast of Spain.
