 The pound continued to benefit from the
 cut in German interest rates and made  
 good ground against the D-mark but it  
 could not keep pace with the dollar.   
                                        
 On the US economic front, March retail 
 sales came in weaker-than-expected with
 a monthly rise of 0.2% against         
 forecasts of between 0.4% and 0.6%.
