 BID FOR WATER COMPANY BLOCKED          
                                        
 A bid for water company Mid Kent       
 Holdings bz General Utilities and SAUR 
 Water Services has been blocked bz the 
 Department of Trade and Industry.      
                                        
 Minister Ian Lang said hj agreed with  
 the Monopolies and Mergers Commission  
 report which concluded a mjrgjr would  
 bj against the public interest.        
                                        
 Both General Utilities and SAUR are    
 part of larger French groups.
