 the history of British education in the
 20th century, Ian Hislop moves on to   
 the inter-war period.                  
                                        
 The orthodox history is that this was  
 a "Golden Age" when cheerful children  
 received moral and academic instruction
 from film but kindly teachers, but Ian 
 paints a very different picture.       
                                        
 He uses candid interviews and archive  
 footage to illustrate a period of cruel
 canings, overcrowded classrooms and    
 out-of-touch teaching methods.
