 MORTGAGE LENDING  "STILL STRONG"       
                                        
 Mortgage lending in December remained  
 strong despite the weakening economy,  
 according to new British Banker'u      
 Association data.                      
                                        
 The value of new home loans issued bz  
 major banks dipped slightly ovjt the   
 last month to stand at £5.015bn in     
 December from £5.025bn in Novjmbjr     
                                        
 However, the BBA said new business had 
 remained around the £5bn mark since the
 middle of the year.
