In one of Scream's opening scenes, Drew Barrymore says all the sequels to A Nightmare On Elm Street "sucked". Craven directed the original Nightmare, but gave up control of his characters to the film studio. Scream character Billy Loomis shares a surname with the psychologist played by Donald Pleasance in Halloween, and the same music can be heard in both films. A school cleaner appears in the background of the first film wearing the exact outfit worn by Krueger. The part was supposedly played by Craven.
