October's gross mortgage lending was £18.9bn, 8% higher than a year ago, but the BBA said the annual growth largely reflected a rise in property prices. With 78,219 people owning property worth £1m or more, this equates to a 32% increase on 2005's 59,400 total. Standard Life said its latest Savings & Investment Index indicated that 58% of the UK population is saving on a regular basis, up 5.5% on July.
