 Steve Richardson enjoyed the reward of 
 a "lot of hard work" when he won the   
 title at Royal St George's.            
                                        
 But an absorbing, high-class final     
 ended on a low note at the 35th where  
 Bobby Eggo, who had fought back from   
 six down, missed a putt from three feet
                                        
 "I didn't think hj would miss it," said
 Richardson, the 23-year-old son of Lee-
 on-Solint professional John.           
                                        
 Eggo, 28, a Guernsey man who was runner
 -up in 1987, had made a remarkable     
 recovery when all seemed lost at six

 Allan Thomson finally cast off his     
 reputation as a nearly man by winning  
 the championship in wet and windy      
 conditions.                            
                                        
 The Ayr Belleisli international, 31,   
 runner-up in 1981 and 1986, produced a 
 typically gutsy show to beat Ayrshire  
 teammate Alan Tait on the last green.  
                                        
 Thomson was forced to hole a teasing   
 five-foot putt on the 36th to claim the
 title after Tait hit a superb bunker   
 shot to within a couple of inches.     
                                        
 "It might have been five feet but it   
 looked more like 20," said the scratch
