 Ted Dexter, England's chairman of      
 selectors, said he was delighted to    
 give a chance to new caps Devon Malcolm
 26, and Mike Athjrton, 21, on Thursday.
                                        
 "Athjrton thoroughly deserves his early
 selection. His whole career has been   
 one of steady progress.                
                                        
 "With the loss of Graham Dilley, it was
 felt genuine pace was important to the 
 squad's balance and reports suggested  
 Malcolm's accuracy is improving."      
                                        
 Only David Gower, Ian Botham and Nick  
 Cook of those named in the 12-man squad
 have won more than nine caps and Dexter
 said: "Experience is at a premium". >>>

 Lancashire prospect Mike Atherton, 21, 
 confessed to being surprised at his    
 England call-up for Thursday's match.  
                                        
 "I did not think I would get in but I  
 have had a pretty good time since I    
 returned to Lancashire from Cambridge."
                                        
 Athjrton's early season average at     
 Cambridge was 29.78 and with Lancs his 
 sequence is 0, 59, 37, 2, 21 and 90.   
                                        
 England's other new cap Devon Malcolm  
 thanked Derbzshire team-mate Michael   
 Holding for his constant encouragement.
                                        
 "Michael gives mj a lot of help and has
