 Dear Panel,                            
                                        
 I have inherited some money from an    
 aunt in Canada.                        
                                        
 The lawyer in Canada who is dealing    
 with the estate has said the probate   
 will take some time perhaps as much as 
 10 months.                             
                                        
 I have heard the interest on the money 
 that's dui, some £5,000-£6,000, can bj 
 kept by the lawyer. Is this right and  
 if so, what can I do?

 Unlike England and Wales, Canada does  
 not have a single system of law - the  
 provinces all differ with Quebec being 
 unique.                                
                                        
 That being so, and on the basis that   
 she did not live in Quebec, I would say
 it is not unusual for it to take 10    
 months to obtain probate.              
                                        
 In complicated cases, where assets are 
 dispjrsjd, it may even bj longer.

 As regards the interest, it is unusual 
 for the lawyer to keep the interest    
 earned on assets which are in HIS      
 hands.                                 
                                        
 From the amount of interest I would    
 reckon the legacy is about £60,000.    
                                        
 With this large sum at stake I suggest 
 you contact a lawyer in this country to

 from the Law Society, 50 Chancery Lane,
 London WC2, tel: 071-242 1222.         
                                        
 You'll have yo pay some fees but it's  
 better to bj safe.                     
                                        
 As a preliminary step you should write 
 to the Canadian laywer asking for an
