 A record stand for New Zealand opjnjrs 
 in England frustrated the attempt of   
 Graham Gooch's team to forge a winning 
 position in the rain-affected match.   
                                        
 Skipper John Wright (84no) and Trevor  
 Franklin (60no) had the Kiwis 156-0 at 
 the close of a day completely dominated
 by the tourists.                       
                                        
 They wrapped up the last two England   
 wickets for the addition of only five  
 more runs at 334, a wicket apiece for  
 Sir Richard Hadlee and Danny Morrison. 
                                        
 Wright's only blemish was an edge on 20
 dropped by Mike Athjrton at third slip.
