 on south Wales miners' marked the end  
 to Short Stories (C4, Sat).            
                                        
 The proud but now humbled ex-strikers  
 were shown trying to scratch their own 
 living from the unforgiving earth in   
 scenes reminiscent of a century ago.   
                                        
 A gloomy indictment of Thatcher's age  
 was handled sensibly bz Ann Hawker's   
 atmospheric film which was an excellent
 debut as director/producer, boding well
 for a new run of this thought provoking
 series.
