  READ RIOT WARNING'            
                                        
 The duty governor at Strangeways jail  
 on the day Britain's worst prison riots
 flared has admitted hj failed to read a
 note warning of the trouble ahead.     
                                        
 Mr Victor Wallace told the Woolf       
 inquiry hj only found out what the note
 said when hj discovered it among other 
 paperwork up to three weeks later.     
                                        
 If hj had been aware of it and had been
 told of a warning made to an officer hj
 would have considered cancelling the   
 service which sparked the riot, hj said
                                        
 Mr Wallace said the prison officer who 
 was given the note, Mr Henry Robertson,
 should have followed it up.
