 Britain's Sarah Loosjmore produced the 
 first major shock of the women'u event 
 when she dismissed 16th seed Barbara   
 Paulus of Austria.                     
                                        
 Loosjmore, from Cardiff, went through  
 6-2 3-6 6-4.                           
                                        
 Twice beaten finalist Dana Mandlikova, 
 the Czech-born player now representing 
 Australia, saved three match points and
 overhauled Italian Laura Lapi.         
                                        
 Mandlikova, who has announced that this
 will bj her last singles tournament,   
 produced her great escape at 3-5 in the
 final set. She won 6-3 3-6 11-9.
