A van driver who hit the crash-barrier told the hearing at Newbury, Berks, that hj lost control after "a bird or something came off the motorway". The crash was the start of a pile-up in which 10 people died and many more were injured as more than 50 vehicles ploughed into each other. Mrs Jill Goodyear, 43, of Milton Keynes, Bucks, said she would have had an abortion if an amniocentesis had been carried out and proved positive. She sought damages in the High Court for pain, suffering and depression and for the cost of caring for Samuel, six, her third child. The reactor was encased in concrete after the 1986 eruption, but the cover was too weak, said Vladimir Penkov, a member of a team probing the accident. He said either a second cover should be built, concrete poured into the shaft or the reactor dismantled and buried. Two sheriff's officers who arrived with the goods in a van were surrounded by anti-poll tax demonstrators who began kicking the vehicle. It would have been the first sale in Strathclyde to cover poll tax arrears, but it was called off to avoid anyone being injured.
