Carmen is set in a cigarette factory in Spain while Carmen Jones has an all- black cast and is set in a parachute factory in WWII in Alabama. Carmen Jones is Carmen toned down so all the sentences in between the arias that would bj sung are spoken - thank God! I went into training because my singing background was different but it was a part I felt I could play. I wouldn't or couldn't ever bj an opera singer and achieve that pure kind of sound - but with the right technique you can get away with a certain amount. It warn't until I saw the opera Carmen last year - in my very old age - that I'd ever been to the opera!
