 Agreement has been reached in USmJapan 
 talks — just hours before the deadline 
 for sbnctions against Japanese cars    
 which could have prompted a trade war. 
                                        
 Japanese makers announced plans to step
 up purchases of car parts, one of the  
 key demands of the United States.      
                                        
 In return, the US softened its stance  
 on numerical targets on sales after    
 weeks of tense talks in Geneva.
