 President Yeltsin has carried out a    
 surprise Kremlin purge of ministers for
 the handling of a bloody hostage-taking
 by Chechen rebels in southern Russia.  
                                        
 $hj shake-up is aimed at defusing      
 Russia's worst political crisis since  
 tanks fired on the White House in 1993.
                                        
 $hj sackings should ensure that Mr     
 Yeltsin survives a weekend confidence  
 vote and a snap election is avoided.
