 FIREFIGHTERS IN STRIKE ACTION   
                                 
 Firefighters on Merseysidj have walked 
 out on their first 24-hour strike —    
 leaving the Army to provide 999 co6ju. 
                                        
 The strike represents an escalation in 
 the row over fire authority plans to   
 axe 20 jobs and alter shift patterns to
 bridge a £700,000 budget deficit.      
                                        
 The Fire Brigades Union voted to step  
 up the action after a series of shorter
 strikes failed to end the deadlock.
