Radon is a colourless, odourless and invisible gas in every home in Britain. It occurs naturally in the earth's crust and arises from the radiactive decay of uranium. The Government regard radon as a "serious" problem. ——————————————————————————————————1/3—— Headlines 300 News in Focus 320 LINCOLN TRAVEL SHOP SEE P256 Next page Headlines News poll Letters

The Government accepts exposure to the decay products of the gas increases the risk of lung cancer. Radon is believed to be the second most important cause of lung-cancer deaths after smoking. ——————————————————————————————————2/3—— Radon power line cancer link 308 WEATHER FOR YOUR REGION p105 Next page Headlines News poll Letters

The gas decay products disperse quickly in open air but there is concern in modern homes in areas of high radon levels. Cornwall and Devon were designated as radon affected areas in 1990 followed two years later by parts of Somerset, Northamptonshire and Derbyshire. ——————————————————————————————————3/3—— Headlines 300 News in Focus 320 WEATHER FOR YOUR REGION p105 Next page Headlines News poll Letters
