 LEBANON FETES VISITING POPE   
                             
 Muslims and Christians gave Pope John  
 Paul a rousing welcome to Lebanon on   
 his first Middle East visit.           
                                        
 Tens of thousands of people lined the  
 Pontiff's route from the airport to the
 Presidential palace.                   
                                        
 In his first speech of the visit he    
 made a veiled call for the withdrawal  
 of foreign forces and an appeal to heal
 the wounds of civil war.
