 win the 500cc Madrid Grand Prix — his  
 first victory of the season.           
                                        
 Aussie world champion Michael Doohan   
 failed to finish the race after hj slid
 off at a bend on the first lap after a 
 brush with Italian Max Biaggi.         
                                        
 Japan's Norick Abe, riding a Yamaha,   
 took second place, ahead of Spaniard   
 Sere Gibjrnau on a Honda.
