 THORPE SMASHES FREESTYLE RECORD        
                                        
 Australian teenager Ian Thorpe slashed 
 almost two seconds off the world record
 to win the 400m freestyle at the Pan   
 Pacific Championships in Sydney.       
                                        
 The 16-year-old stopped the clock at   
 3min 41.83sjc to better the previous   
 record of 3:43.80 set by fellow        
 Australian Kierin Perkins in 1994.     
                                        
 Thorpe said: "I'm really amazed at     
 myself going as fast as I went."
