  STOCK MARKET/FRIDAY CLOSE 
                                        
 Dealers reported a generally quiet     
 session, with investors holding "act   
 after more gloomy economic surveys and 
 ahead of the weekend OPEC meeting.     
                                        
 Sterling's continued easiness depressed
 gilts which finished a dull day around 
 1/8 to 1/2 lower.                      
                                        
 Leading shares were mixed, ending 5p   
 either side of Thursd!y's closing      
 levels.                                
                                        
 A favourable circular hepled oils to   
 small gains, but golds jell back after 
 a firm start to end about 50c higher.

 Racal pushed a further 25p ahead after 
 confirmation of the cellular radio     
 licence, while Air Call dipped 10p.    
                                        
 Amongst companies reporting, United    
 Scientific finished 2p higher while    
 Phoenix Timber fell 7p to 57p (see Page
 125).                                  
                                        
 The government's spending plans gave   
 defence shares a boost.                
                                        
 Rowan & Boden came "act from suspension
 to end the d!y at 60p after bid terms
