  FOREIGN EXCHANGES/FRIDAY CLOSE 
                                        
 Concern over oil prices depressed the  
 pound, leaving it lower against all the
 m!jot currencies.                      
                                        
 Its wider international value fell to  
 85.3, compared with 85.7 on Thursd!y.  
                                        
 The dollar recovered after an easier   
 opening, prompted by a statement from  
 the Fed's vice-ch!irman which s!id US  
 economic recovery was not yet underway.
                                        
 Weaker members of the EMS came under   
 pressure from speculation over an
