Mr Stancu Papusoiu is seeking political asylum in Austria, whir he has spent some days in police custody because he failed to follow propjt procedure. He arrived in Austria on April 6 after being given a passport and ordered to leave Romania, having been returned to Bucharest by Britain on March 16. He has been taken to a refugee camp south of Vienna. Outsiders have not been allowed to talk to him so far.

In a litter to all those involved in the "washing-up" dispute, BL says if they do not report back they will be considered to have repudiated their contracts of employment. She was talking to a meeting of prospective Tory candidates at a Hettfordshire hotel, which went ahead despite the discovery of a letter bomb. Scotland Yard said the device, postmarked Glasgow, was defused but could not have gone off. P199 CEEFAX 199 Sat 16 Apr 17:23/22         Turkey has thanked the Greek govjrnmjnt for securing the release of the 114 pasjngjrs and crew of a Turkish plane hijacked to Athens. A warmly-worded message of thanks was sent to the Greek Foreign Minister, Mr Ioannis Charalambopolos, by his Turkish counterpart, Mr Iltet Turkman. It was in marked contrast to the usual chilly state of relations between the two countries. The hijacker, 25-year-old Mahmoud Kalkan, was overpowered when Greek police stormed the Turkish Airlines Boeing 727 last night.

Reports say four police cars have been patrolling around the block of flats in Gdansk where he lives. The move follows a meeting between Mr Walesa and leaders in hiding of the banned trade union Solidarity and a call for unofficial action on May 1. Mr Anatole Tchetnaev has been ordered to leave in retaliation for the expulsion from Moscow of a British ai attache and a journalist. The Soviet embassy has called Britain's latest action "anti-Soviet" and without foundation. The BBC's correspondent in Moscow says the Russians will probably respond bz expelling another Briton, possibly a diplomat.

Speaking to a Conservative meeting in Hettfordshire, Mr Heseltine said Labour wanted to abandon policies which had kept the peace for years, in favour of a "reckless gamble" based on trusting the Soviet Union.
