Mr Goossens, who started pla9ing when he was 10, discovered in the oboe technical resources hitherto unknown. His playing inspired a crop of new works, many of them dedicated to himself, bz composers such as Strauss, Poulenc and Britten. He was born in Liverpool, one of a celebrated musical family of Belgian origin, which has produced nine first rank musicians in three generations. News index 102/202 Newsreel 119/219
