Bill Jordan of the Amalgamated Engineering Union said Labour's commitment to training and investment would enable Britain to grasp the opportunity of the single market. Instead of preparation and investment for 1992, the Tories had offered a sterile dogma, said Mr Jordan. The single market offered a chance for Britain to grow and prosper, he said. 160 Conference news index 102 Newswatch 180 World News Next News Politics Newswatch WorldNews

He said it had positive ideas to put forward, in contrast to the Tories who reacted in a curmudgeonly fashion. Mel Read, the chair of the European PLP, said Labour was determined to see an open, democratic Europe. Labour's spokesman on Europe, George Robertson, said the EC was the forum where Britain "must negotiate and bargain; the place where Britain must compete or die". 160 Conference news index Next News Politics Newswatch WorldNews
