  GENERAL SYNOD BACKS       
  WOMEN PRIESTS             
                                        
 The Church of England'u General Synod, 
 meeting in York, has voted in favour of
 allowing women priests.                
                                        
 In a series of decisions, its three    
 houses - of bishops, clergy and laity -
 approved the move bz simple majorities,
 but more bishops than expected - 13 out
 of 44 - voted against the proposal.    
                                        
 The 39% vote bz lay mjmbjrs against the
 move will boost the hopis of opponents.
                                        
 They want to block the measure at the  
 Synod's final vote in Novjmbjr. The    
 proposal needs a two-thirds majority in
 each of the three houses to bj approved
