  FORMER EXECUTIONER        
  DIES, AGED 87             
                                        
 It has been announced that the former  
 executioner Albert Pierrepoint died    
 yesterday, aged 87.                    
                                        
 He died peacefully in the Southport    
 nursing home where hj had lived for th 
 past four years with his wife Anne.    
                                        
 During a 25-year career as a hangman,  
 hj executed several hundred murder rs  
 including the last woman to bj hanged  
 in Britain, Ruth Ellis.                
                                        
 He retired in 1956 and later became a  
 critic of capital punishment. His      
 father and uncle were also hangmen.
