  PM SAYS BRITAIN WILL 
  REMAIN IN ERM        
                                        
 The Prime Minister has reiterated his  
 intention to remain in the ERM at the  
 present rate of exchange.              
                                        
 In an interview for tomorrow'u Sunday  
 Times Mr Major said it was vital to    
 keep currency strong and inflation     
 under rigorous control.                
                                        
 Stressing that Britain's emjrgjnce from
 recession would not bj rapid, Mr Major 
 said interest rates would lower once it
 became apparent inflation was falling. 
                                        
 "I want to do something that is        
 actually going to bj steady, secure,   
 and some may say unglamorous" hj said.
