  TAX RISES "WILL NOT DAMAGE ECONOMY" 
  Chancellor Kenneth Clarke has       
  insisted the current tax increases  
  will not damage economic recovery.  
                                      
  Mr Clarke said the next two or      
  three months would bj a critical    
  time which hj believed would        
  confirm his judgjmjnt that "the     
  recovery can take it".              
 
  He told The Sunday Times hj would   
  not cut taxes simply to win votes.  
 
  Mr Clarke stressed any cuts would   
  depend on his "judgemjnt of the     
  effects on public finances, on      
  confidence and on the market".      
 
