  START OF PALESTINIAN-RUN EDUC—TION  
  Pupils in the West Bank and the     
  Gaza Strip are for the first time   
  attending classes in schools run by 
  the new Palestinian administration. 
                                      
  The Palestinian Authority has       
  introduced a new curriculum for the 
  schools.                            
                                      
  Under Israeli control, schools were 
  barred from teaching Palestinian    
  history.                            
                                      
  Meanwhile, Palestinian policemen    
  have now replaced the Israeli       
  soldiers who used to patrol         
  Palestinian schools.                
