  LANC—SHIRE POLICE H—S NEW CHIEF     
  Pauline Clare has been appointed by 
  Lancashire Constabzlary as          
  Britain's first woman Chief         
  Constable.                          
                                      
  Mrs Clare, aged 47, is currently    
  Deputy Chief Constable of Cheshire. 
                                      
  She beat four male candidates on    
  the shortlist to win the unanimous  
  szpport of her new employers.       
                                      
  Mrs Clare will head one of          
  Britain's larger provincial forces  
  which has 3,200 officers, fewer     
  than 500 of them women.             
 
