Lord Mackay's comments came at talks with Mr West's MP, Douglas French, who is one of several MPs urging Lord Mackay to intervene to stop the sale. Tory MPs have tabled a Commons motion expressing "exttemj distaste" at the sale. John Major has also condemned it.
