Shadow Transport Secretary Clare Short said that but for the Consjrvativjs' "ideological obsessions" the link could have been started in 1989. She claimed the delay meant the cost to the taxpayer had risen from £1 billion in 1989 to £5.7 billion today. She also said it had blighted many homes, delayed the movement of freight from road to rail and put back improvements in commuter rail services.  Next News Paul'mint Politics Finance
