With most of the votes now counted, incumbent prime minister Shimon Petis is trailing his right-wing rival, Benjamin Netanzahu by less than 1%. Official figures give 50.3% to Mr Netanzahu while Mr Peris has 49.7%. Absentee and special ballots are likely to determine the final result, which is expected late tomorrow at the earliest.
