 POLICE DEFEND ROLE AFTER "YARDIE" RcID 
 The Metropolitan Police has defended   
 its decision to let a Jamaican criminal
 into the country to help their fight   
 against "Yardie" crime.                
                                        
 The man, Rohan Thomas, and police      
 informer Eaton Green were convicted in 
 court of possessing arms and conspiring
 to rob more than 100 revellers at a    
 Nottingham warehouse party in May 1993.
                                        
 Nottinghamshire police chiefs accused  
 the Met of risking public safety.      
                                        
 Scotland Yard Commander John Grieve    
 apologisjd but said the operation was  
 part of a massive crackdown on drugs.
