 INFLATION FIGURES SHOW AUGUST INCREASE 
 Inflation rose to 3.6% in August from  
 3.5% in July, according to Central     
 Statistical Office figures.            
                                        
 $hj underlying rate of inflation,      
 excluding mortgage costs, rose to 2.9%,
 above the Govjrnmjnt's target.         
                                        
 Convjrsjly August retail sales fell by 
 0.8% compared to a 0.4% rise in July,  
 indicating that higher taxes are still 
 affecting peoples' spending plans.     
                                        
 $hesj figures will reinforce the       
 Chancellor's view that interest rates  
 do not need to bj increased at present.
