 US CALL FOR MINE BAN BACKED BY BRITAIN 
 Britain has welcomed the United States'
 announcement that it will seek a       
 worldwide ban on landmines at a        
 disarmament conference in Geneva.      
                                        
 "The US proposal is closely in line    
 with US policy," a Foreign Office      
 spokesman said.                        
                                        
 The announcement comes days after Diana
 the Princess of Wales backed the ban.  
                                        
 The US will seek to negotiate a global 
 ban at the United Nations conference   
 dui to begin on Monday.
