 Serious — yes, funny — very rarely.    
                                        
 Howard Jacobson has been given the     
 opportunity to air his views on humour 
 and hj did so at length.               
                                        
 There were few laughs, but Roy Chubby  
 Brown produced a minute of amusing gags
                                        
 Some Americans came to the conclusion  
 that laughter was the best medicine — I
 think I may have read that in a        
 magazine somewhere.                    
                                        
 Mr Jacobson travelled to the US, Rsi   
 Lanka, Telford and Blackpool. A long   
 way to go to discover Bernard Manning.
