Russell's performance followed a spectacular crash during the morning which saw Colin Edwards forced out. Edwards was hit by Yamaha ridjt Jean- Philippe Ruggia and sustained a fractured right wrist. John Kocinski put in a late burst on his Castrol Honda to grab third place on the grid ahead of Aaron Slight.
