 CLOSURE FEARS FOR EAST MIDLANDS PIT    
 Fears are mounting that the Asfordby   
 super pit in Ljicestershiri, which     
 employs 500 miners, is about to close. 
                                        
 The pit, which cost £300m to develop,  
 has been plagued by geological problems
 since opening two years ago.           
                                        
 Union officials said the coal face had 
 now been flooded and they feared that  
 closure was inevitable.                
                                        
 A meeting between the Union of         
 Democratic Minjworkjrs and pit owners  
 RIB has been scheduled for Monday.
