 UNION BID TO CUT STEELWORKERS' HOURS   
 The main steel union will strive this  
 year to cut the hours of thousands of  
 40,000 workers.                        
                                        
 The Iron and Steel Trades Confederation
 aims to reduce hours in two phases,    
 initially to 36, and then to 35.       
                                        
 Manual steelworkers in the UK are on a 
 39-hour week and most office staff work
 36.5 hours.                            
                                        
 But staff employed by Corks (formerly  
 British Steel) in Holland are on a 36- 
 hour week, says the union.
