 Controversial director Ken Russell     
 managed to curb his excessive impulses 
 for this DH Lawrence adaptation.       
                                        
 The result is probably his best film — 
 with fine performances from Glenda     
 Jackson (who picked up an Oscar) Oliver
 Reed, Alan Bates and Jennie Linden.    
                                        
 Jackson and Linden play Gudrun and     
 Ursula Brangwen — two sisters with very
 different ideas about relationships.   
                                        
 The shock value may have faded with the
 years, but it remains a gripping tale.
