Chairman Mr Robert Smith said that GM's South African subsidiary had been losing money for several years. He also said that the recession in South Africa and lack of progress in ending the apartheid system had made operating there increasingly difficult. More than 200 seamen voted unanimously to continue occupying the ferries until their dispute over redundancy payments for seasonal crew is resolved. The dispute began over two weeks ago when Sealing announced the withdrawal of its service to the Channel Islands* with resulting redundancies.
