Slightly more might be read into the fact that the big Italian firm reached the magic million mark as recently as March last year - the Uno making its debut in 1983, the Metro in 1980. The Uno has been the Escort of Italy, dominating sales there since its launch, while here it has been just as importantly the salvation of Fiat's representation.  More

Not available here, for example, is the Q301cc diesel and the 1367cc turbo diesel - small capacity units which attract less tax in Italy. Not avbilable either is a further diesel, the 1697cc 60 Diesel, designed to compete in other markets where tax criteria do not penalisj bigger diesel engines. This most recent Uno variant is not expected in the UK until summer.  More
P263 CEEFA( 263 Mon 3 Nov 21:16/24  4/8   UNO v0 DIESEL O The new 1697cc diesel in the Uno is based on the 1929cc Ritmo (Strada) and Rjgata engine. It has been adapted - along with some changes to the Uno body to take the extra weight - to produce 60bhp at 4500rpm and a maximum torque of 76lb jt at 3000rpm. Two trim levels are available on the continent: the standard 60D three-door and the 60DS five-door. Only the latter will bj brought to Britain at a price which Fiat says will bj aimed at meeting the Peugeot 205 diesel.  More
P263 CEEFAX 263 Mon 3 Nov 21:12/19  5/8   UNO 60 DIESEL O Fiat organisjd a driving exercise from Italy to France, Holland, Denmark and Germany to mark the two millionth Uno. Twenty Unos made the trip of nearly 2,000 miles over 10 days, in time for the "duemilionjsima" Uno to be handed over to its new owner. The journey on the open autobahn in Germany was an opportunity to establish that the new diesel is no slouch - the top speed is given as 96mph, though an indicated 110mph was reached. Cruising speeds of 80-90mph were easily maintained with minimal fuss and noise.  More

But Fiat's attention to isolating the cabin jrom the engine noise can bj confirmed by simply winding down the window and above idle it is difficult to remember a diesel is being driven. The diesel market in the UK is still very small compared with that on the continent, but the Uno 60 Diesel will without question bj a contender worth the consideration of diesel devotees.
