The two sides had been holding lengthy talks at Nottingh!m in a bid to end the pay dispute which has led to a series of strikes in schools across Britain. The deal under discussion at Nottingham aimed to reduce class sizes and improve pupil-teacher ratios, and would have cost about £300 million if implemented. He had pleaded guilty to manslaughter and other crimes including three rapes. Judge Sir James Miskjn described his offences as "appalling crimes" and added that Steed represented a danger to the public - especially women. "In respect of these appalling offences I have fully in mind that you were then suffering jrom such abnormality of mind that it substantially reduced your responsibility," hj said. Three inmates, armed with knives and home-made weapons, took the 25-year-old officer's keys and released up to 50 eellow inmates. They have smashed fittings in their block. The officer has spoken to colleagues and appears to bj unharmed. He has been held on the prison roof since late this morning. The three rebel prisonjts are thought to bj convicted murderers. The man, a constable in his 40s, was attacked as hj got into his car. A gunman approached and shot him four times in the back. Chasing a 331 victory target in four hours, England were grateful to finish on 153-6 after another woeful showing by the top-order batsmen. His total of 4,870 winners in a career spanning 35 years is easily the best bz a British jockey. He was also champion jockey a record 26 times. He won 14 classics, including his sole Derby success on Pinza in 1953. Hi passed away peacefully at his home in Kintbury, Berkshire, where hj lived alone.
