      LONGER LEADING INDEX 
      FELL 0.6% IN AUGUST  
 
  The US longer leading index, which  
  helps identify turns in economic    
  activity some 13 months in advance, 
  fell back in August.                
                                      
  The index dropped by 0.6% to stand  
  at 107.3, the Central Statistical   
  Office has said.                    
                                      
  The shorter leading index, which    
  reflects changes five months ahead, 
  continued to rise, helped by higher 
  shari prices and business orders.   
                                      
  It rose by 2.3% to 107.7 in August. 
                                      
